Safflower

Safflower - Natural DyeSafflower – Carthamus tinctorious, an annual thistle. This plant is most known for the oil that can be derived from it’s seeds but it also has properties in its petals that make it a most magical dyestuff. Yellow and pink to orange reds and corals can be extracted from the petals.

The first colour that comes from the extracting process is yellow which can be collected and used as a base dye on all mordanted natural fibers except wool. Safflower reds are obtained after the yellow dye is completely washed out by “turning the bath” (drastically changing the ph to an alkaline and back to slightly acidic).
