These containers were traditionally used to hold tilaka powder. In Hinduism, the tilaka (or tilak) is a mark worn on the forehead and sometimes the centre of the upper head. Tilaka may be worn on a daily basis or for special religious occasions. The containers are painted wood and stand between four and six inches high. The texture of the patina is particularly interesting and gives each piece a distinctive feeling.
