Properties and Procedures

A resist is used in fabric painting and other direct application techniques to control the spreading of the dye. A thin line of resist is drawn onto the fabric, it penetrates the fibers and dries to form an insoluble barrier that stops the flow of dye. The resist line must penetrate through to the other side of the fabric to be effective. Resists can be applied with brushes, squeeze bottles, pipettes, paper cones, silkscreens, or interesting effects can be achieved by spattering, rollering, sponging, etc. Resists may be water-based, solvent based, natural or synthetic.
