Colour and Illusions of Light

This second workshop in the Colour Institute series is aimed to help participants move more fully into their own work on colour and design. Colour Institute II builds on the concepts introduced in Colour Institute I with the introduction of more complex colour problems and design development. Skillful guidance leads to an understanding of the influence of light as a design variable.

Light is a determining factor in all creative design. The source of light and its qualities affect our colour perceptions, ideas of colour dominance, and the ways we consider substrate variations. Think of the blue light at dawn or the fiery shades of sunset as they influence a piece of art. Play with morning mist, moonbeams and sunstreaks, the inner glow of a waxy candle, and the shimmer of a gold bangle to create the intriguing effects that animate a work.

The many aspects of colour all change radically based on how light interacts with the surface of a work. Weave structures such as damask, satin, and velvet all play with depth, while pounding, calendaring, and other burnishing techniques achieve a reflective surface through loss of depth. Colour Institute II will study optical light variations such as luminosity, iridescence, reflectivity, and lustre, and students will learn how to apply these effects to their own work in various ways. The class will work with diverse materials such as watercolours, images, colour chips, fabrics, yarn, and other colour tools to work out more elevated and complex colour processes.

Prerequisite: Colour Institute I

Michele Wipplinger is also teaching Colour Institute I and Mud Cloth.
